  • It is important to remember that all children can experience challenges and difficulties at various stages of childhood, school years and later on in adult life.

  • In many cases, a child may demonstrate temporary behaviour or learning problems due to unsettling situations at home or in school.

  • Sometimes, a secure and calm environment may be all that is required take care of these temporary issues.

  • While it is important to be alert to behaviour changes, a child must present several characteristics of a disorder consistently over time to be diagnosed as having special needs.

  • Simply matching the characteristics of a child to a list of symptoms is not enough to diagnose that child as having a disorder.
